Moving a Piano: Costs, Tips, and Checklist
A piano is no ordinary piece of furniture: it is heavy (typically 150 - 300 kg), sensitive, and can be permanently damaged by improper handling. Whether after a move, a purchase, or a sale – the right transport is crucial. This guide explains what piano transport costs, when you need a specialist, and what to watch out for.
The prices are based on current market data for Germany (as of 2026). Costs can vary significantly by region and complexity.
How Much Does Piano Transport Cost?
The price depends on distance, floor, stairwell, and type of instrument. As rough guidelines:
- Local (up to approx. 20 km): approx. €150 - €350 for an upright piano on the ground floor or with lift access. Stair transport adds approx. €10 - €20 per floor.
- Regional (up to approx. 200 km): approx. €250 - €600. Costs increase with distance (typically €1 - €2 per km) and the complexity of loading/unloading.
- Long distance (over 200 km): approx. €400 - €800, potentially more. With large distances or difficult access, costs can be considerably higher.
- Grand piano transport: Grand pianos are more complex to transport: approx. €100 - €200 surcharge over an upright. Per floor: approx. €150 - €250. Large concert grands often require specialist equipment (furniture lift, crane).
Tip: collect at least 2 to 3 quotes. Platforms such as Clicktrans or MyHammer allow a quick price comparison across specialist piano movers.
When Do I Need a Piano Specialist?
Not every removal company is suitable for piano transport. Key differences:
- Standard removal companies
Sufficient for: upright pianos on the ground floor or with a wide lift, short distances, uncomplicated layout. Advantage: often 20 - 40% cheaper than specialists. Risk: less specialist knowledge, potentially no piano-specific insurance. - Specialist piano removers
Required for: grand pianos, narrow stairwells, multiple floors without a lift, high-value instruments (Steinway, Bösendorfer etc.), international transport. Advantages: specialist equipment, experience, dedicated piano insurance. Cost: 30 - 50% higher than standard.
For instruments worth more than approx. €5,000 we always recommend a specialist mover. The higher cost is justified by the significantly lower risk of damage.
Special Case: Stairs and Narrow Access
Stairs are the most common challenge in piano transport. Key information:
- Cost per floor: For uprights: approx. €30 - €80 per floor. For grand pianos: approx. €150 - €250 per floor. Narrow stairs or bends increase effort further.
- Furniture lift / external lift: When a piano cannot be transported through the stairwell, an external furniture lift is used. Cost: approx. €150 - €350 additional. Often worthwhile from the second floor upwards to avoid damage to the instrument and stairwell.
- Window entry: In very narrow stairwells, or when the piano won't fit through the front door, it must be hoisted through a window. This requires specialist equipment. Cost: approx. €200 - €400 additional.
Tip: share all details with the transport company in advance – floor, stairwell width, lift availability, parking situation. This avoids surprises and additional costs.
Checklist: Preparing for Piano Transport
What to arrange before the transport:
- Book the transport company early – good specialists are often booked weeks in advance
- Measure and communicate the dimensions of the piano and the stairwell/doors in advance
- Clarify lift or furniture lift availability
- Check parking at both addresses (apply for no-parking zone if needed)
- State the value of the instrument for insurance purposes
- Let the piano acclimatise for at least 2–3 weeks after transport before having it tuned – vibrations and changes in room climate will detune the instrument anyway
- Photograph the condition before transport (for damage claims)
Piano transport is manageable and, with good preparation, safe even for sensitive instruments. Invest in a reputable service provider – poor transport is the most common cause of damage.
